Commentary: Illinois could be heading same direction as Detroit

The Motor City is now the bankrupt city. The news that Detroit had declared bankruptcy wasn’t unexpected, but it still was a bit of a shock. The Motor City, at one time a shining example of what innovation and a dedicated workforce can accomplish, is now a shell of itself. Although the city will continue to operate, bankruptcy is an embarrassment.
For those of us in Illinois, Detroit’s problem may be a bit of a relief. Late-night comedians will have a new punch line for their jokes, at least for a while.
But if you dig below the surface a bit, there are a lot of similarities between Detroit and Illinois.
