State treasurer warns Orland leaders about pension crisis

Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford delivered a somber message about the state's financial outlook during an impromptu meeting with Orland Park officials last week.

Rutherford warned that unless state lawmakers quickly come to an agreement about the pension crisis, towns like Orland Park could soon start to feel its effect.

The longer legislators go without reaching a compromise, Rutherford said, the longer the state goes without properly investing in public safety, schools and infrastructure.

"You name it, the state can't do it," Rutherford said. "All of that new money is basically going into the state pension system."
